For this Charming Austin Texas guest feature, contributor Karin Springerley spent a night at Camp Lucy in Dripping Springs, experiencing the resort and Folklore Spa firsthand. Here, she shares her take on the thoughtful design, Hill Country setting, and details that made the stay memorable.
Style and comfort reside in abundance at Camp Lucy, a luxury resort tucked into the Texas Hill Country in Dripping Springs.
The Texas Hill Country is a place of perpetual discovery, and living and traveling here can open anyone’s eyes to the possibilities of what Texas can provide. An opportunity to experience the natural landscape in a contemplative setting is something we always jump at the chance to explore, and Camp Lucy offers exactly that — with a sense of place, history, and design that makes the experience feel entirely its own.
ARRIVING AT CAMP LUCY
Camp Lucy is a luxury ranch resort that sits on 282 scenic acres in Dripping Springs, with Onion Creek winding through much of the property. The resort feels removed from the city while still being close enough to Austin for an easy Hill Country escape.
After check-in, we easily made our way to our Folly guest room, which was truly breathtaking. The design was decidedly maximalist, where print, pattern, and color were executed to perfection. Rather than competing with one another, the layers made the room feel collected and deeply considered.
There were other thoughtful details, like a wall-mounted fan for hot summer nights and a lovely sitting room just off the balcony that was such a great place for morning coffee.
We also noticed the inclusion of native plants that make a genuine difference in how a property shows respect to its location. It was incredible to see the hundreds of butterflies visiting the purple mistflowers right outside the front door of the guest suite. It was one of those small details that immediately connected the experience of staying here to the landscape surrounding it.
A DIFFERENT KIND OF WELLNESS AT FOLKLORE
Since we were visiting Camp Lucy during a warm August day, we opted for the serene experience of the full-service Folklore Spa, located next to our guest suite.
The spa is, again, very mindfully designed. Ornately carved beams that came from a historic town hall in Vietnam bring a sense of history to the space, while art, antiques, rich color, handmade tile, and natural light both blend into and elevate the surroundings.
Color is more than decorative here — it is part of Folklore’s approach to wellness. Throughout the spa, different hues are used intentionally to help shape the experience of a space, from energizing reds to calming blues and balancing greens.
The result feels refreshingly different from the neutral, minimalist aesthetic we’ve come to expect from traditional spas. Folklore is colorful, layered, soulful, and still somehow completely serene.
The spa has all the modern amenities one could expect, with an added focus on overall wellness and introspection. There was a Mahjong lesson happening in the main spa reception room as well as art made by resort guests displayed in the hallway next to the outdoor pool. These touches made the spa feel less like a place you simply visit for a treatment and more like somewhere you’re invited to spend time.
A particular highlight for us was the quiet room and library located just next to the spa — a thoughtful retreat within the retreat.
BEYOND THE SPA
Camp Lucy also has everything a more active visitor might enjoy, including horseback riding, archery, hatchet throwing, hiking, and fishing, to name a few.
The property is also home to Tillie’s, its signature restaurant, which also provides room service, as well as vineyards and beautiful event spaces that feel perfectly at home within the Texas Wine Country landscape.
There is a choose-your-own-adventure quality to a stay here. A day could be spent exploring the property and taking part in activities, lingering over a meal, retreating to the spa, or simply sitting outside and taking in the Hill Country surroundings.
THE BEAUTY IS IN THE DETAILS
While there is truly something for everyone here, we found this resort to be singular in its intentional design.
Everywhere we looked, there seemed to be another detail worth noticing — the relationship between the buildings and the landscape, collected pieces with histories of their own, bold uses of color and pattern, and quiet spaces designed simply for slowing down.
It is a property that accomplishes the difficult task of creating spaces that feel intimate but also grand and dignified. Nothing about the experience feels generic, and perhaps that is what stayed with us most.
A stay at Camp Lucy offers beauty, history, and harmony at every step — and we can’t wait to come back.
