Charming Mid-Century Tudor Revival For Sale in Austin, TX

If you’re like me, you’ve driven past The Bohn House hundreds of times over the years and always wondered about the interior of this art deco, streamline moderne masterpiece. Thanks to the @tribeza Luxury Homes Tour, we finally got the chance to see this beauty in-person and it was everything we’d hoped for and more.

A little history about this home:

The house was designed by owner Herbert Bohn on a napkin after seeing the 1937 science fiction film “Lost Horizon.” The movie, directed by Frank Capra and based on the James Hilton novel, tells the story of survivors of a plane crash who land in Shangri-La.

Bohn, who worked in his father’s department store, had wanted to be an architect, and his designs included many things that were innovative for the time: indirect lighting for recessed alcoves, soft neon lighting in the dining room, a hidden sound system with reverberation to give it a concert-like vibe, glass brick windows for privacy and light in the solarium as well as a separate ventilation system and an intercom system.

To achieve this home for himself and his wife, Alice, and their eventual three children, Bohn enlisted architect Roy L. Thomas — whose work includes the InterContinental Stephen F. Austin Hotel, Pease School and Tarrytown Methodist Church — to help him bring his vision into reality in the year 1938.

The Bohn House was meticulously renovated and expanded by Dick Clark and Associates in 2014 and is currently listed for sale by Phyllis Patek.
