A Stay Beneath the Oaks

There’s a moment, just after you pass beneath the canopy of live oaks, when things begin to quiet down. The city feels close—but not pressing. At The Inn at Green Pastures, that balance is immediate: tucked into Bouldin Creek, yet minutes from South Congress and the rest of Austin.

I stayed here with one of my closest girlfriends, and from the start, the tone was set by a kind of easy, genuine hospitality. Not overly formal—just thoughtful in a way that feels natural. A handwritten note was waiting in the room when we arrived, a small detail that made the space feel immediately personal.

The rooms themselves lean residential in the best sense. Designed by long-admired Austin designer Clayton Korte, they’re warm and understated, with soft textures, good light, and just enough detail to feel considered without trying too much. It’s the kind of space you settle into quickly.

Our first night, we slipped out to Nomade for dinner—about a four-minute Uber, only because of the rain. Otherwise, it’s an easy walk, which is part of what makes this location work so well. You’re close to everything, but it still feels removed.

When we got back, the kitchen had already closed, and we casually mentioned we were craving something sweet. Not long after, a plate of cookies showed up at our door, sent up by the bartender. It was simple, unprompted, and exactly right. That level of attentiveness carried through the entire stay.

The rain stuck around, but it ended up shaping the experience in a good way. Mornings were slow and cozy. At Henry’s, breakfast felt relaxed but thoughtful—lattes, a full Southern spread, and biscuits that honestly might be the best in Austin. We lingered longer than planned.

In between, we walked the grounds, umbrellas in hand, and kept running into the peacocks—nearly two dozen of them, moving freely through the property. They’re part of the rhythm here, unbothered and entirely at home, adding a sense of character that feels both unexpected and deeply rooted in the property’s history.

That feeling is anchored in the story of Green Pastures itself. The original home, completed in 1895, began as a family residence on the edge of Austin, shaded by the same live oaks that still define the property today. Under Judge Henry Faulk and his wife Mattie, it became known for its warmth and hospitality—something that carried forward when the home was transformed into a restaurant and gathering place in 1946. That legacy still shapes the experience today, even in the quieter moments of a hotel stay.

We didn’t make it to the pool this time due to the weather, but it gives us a reason to come back. And we will.

What stands out most about The Inn isn’t just the design—though it’s beautifully done—or even the setting. It’s how effortless everything feels. The service, the pacing, the small gestures. Nothing is overdone, but everything is considered.

It’s the kind of place you return to—not just for the setting, but for the feeling that stays with you after you leave.
